So, you have an upcoming presentation to make…
Keynote speech?…seminar?…panel discussion?…
Will it be remembered as your unique presentation,
or just another “data dump?”
If you’re like most busy business professionals, you may find yourself
waiting until the night prior to your scheduled presentation before
beginning your preparation. However, “wingin’ it” could be hazardous to
your success and reputation.
You don’t want to look foolish in front of your colleagues or potential
clients. Therefore, you think about what you want to say and write an
outline. You put your thoughts down in some kind of logical sequence. And,
because you are intelligent, know your business, and can answer most
questions on the subject, you manage to “get by” with an adequate
presentation.
If you are no longer satisfied with just “getting by,” there are other
options available to you. However, you must take the time to design before
you deliver.
Instead of waiting until the last minute and putting your thoughts down in
a logical order, why not spend some time brain-storming
with others? Ask
the right questions:
-
Who is your audience?
-
What messages would be nice for you to communicate?
-
How much time do you have to speak?
-
What messages must you communicate within the allotted
time?
-
What do you want the audience to do as a result of your
talk?
-
How can you make it your unique presentation instead of
just another data dump?
If you design before you deliver, instead of giving an
adequate presentation, you have the opportunity and possibility of giving
an outstanding, exceptional, and memorable presentation The choice is
yours.
Here are some steps you can take right now:
-
Allow yourself the time to design your presentation; align
yourself with your audience; and rehearse your presentation aloud in
advance.
-
